The Actual Living Status of the Elderly Collecting/Selling Waste Paper and the Welfare Policy Alternative for the Aged

Abstract
This study aimed to present the welfare policy alternative for the aged by examining the living status of the elderly collecting/selling waste paper. Targeting 199 senior citizens collecting/ selling waste paper in Gimhae region, their living status was researched for about six months from February to July 2014. Using SPSS WIN 17.0 for the analysis, t-test and ANOVA were conducted. In the results of the study, first, regarding the general characteristics of the elderly collecting/selling waste paper, the rate of non-recipient was high. Second, the living expenses type of the elderly collecting/selling waste paper were different in accordance with the economic level(monthly average income), matter of cohabiting with family, and sex while the elderly not receiving public aid showed longer hours of collecting waste paper than the elderly receiving public aid. Third, the elderly collecting/selling waste paper showed low social support and interpersonal relationship, which was related to their low preference of participating in public work and negative participation in job for senior citizens. Fourth, the general characteristics, the living status, and health condition of the elderly collecting/selling waste paper were significantly different in the degree of depression. Based on the results of the study above, the living status of poor senior citizens collecting/selling waste paper to earn a living was examined. Through the implications of these results, the welfare policy alternative for the aged were suggested.
